In this design for a weekend home in São Francisco Xavier, in the Mantiqueira Mountains, there is a surprisingly natural accommodation between such disparate elements as the generous panoramic window set in the white wall of the living room—looking out over a vast expanse of mountains—the rustic stone fireplace, the traditional masonry oven and the twisted trunk post in the passageway leading to the bedrooms, which, all blended with the living room, announce other simplicities in the private areas, such as terraces with hammocks, a clay oven and an arbor.

Due to a location choice, the house nears the edge of the bank rather than the center of the small plateau, where there is plenty of space. In reaching the abrupt and concrete edge of the site, frontier between the seclusion of the shelter and the immensity of the panorama, the house takes the form of an incisive blade, pure forms and monumental dimensions adjusted to the scale of the landscape. This symbolic barrier also constitutes the necessary functional protection against the actions of winds and storms coming from the south, and extends beyond the construction, lending its shelter to the terraces and gardens at the back. The thick wall, with its few openings treated as panoramic lookouts, relates to the limited light and broad view of its orientation as do the verandas and the Venetian blinds to the sunlit and enjoyable aspect of the plateau adjacent to the entire north side of the house.
