This house, built on a regular 1,800-sq yard site with a slight inclination in Aldeia da Serra, near the city of São Paulo, responded to a relatively extensive program – three bedrooms, library, studio and office, along with the usual living and service areas – and strong recommendations for a restricted budget and time schedule. This project was thus an ideal occasion for exercising the virtues of simplicity, for the pursuit of the essential, for a dignified use of elementary building techniques.
The subdivision into three functional ground level blocks, in this case, results from a decision to radically simplify the construction by a decompacting approach. The simple volumetric arrangement and the massive and textured aspect of the walls, rustically rendered, give subtle prominence to simple features such as openings, sunshades, jutting water pipes and canopies, among others. They are modest elements in the quantity, cost and utter simplicity of their design. Here, given the parsimony of the architectural move, color does not intervene to distinguish between first and second order volumes, but rather to characterize the different uses of the three sectors of the residence: white for the social block, green for the private one,
and blue for the service block.(...)
