The plot for this residence in the capital of São Paulo presents many difficulties and suggestions. Here the narrowness and unique nature of the plot are the sources of inspiration for symbolic and functional criteria: the heavily built, palpable and noisy neighborhood, the indefinitely urban horizon; the plot with no marked front or back, irregularly shaped in the format of an open 7, linking perpendicular streets and having a slight inclination, a sort of broken passageway. Any move in order to reestablish continuity and fluidity must necessarily veer, twist or rebound. And that is what indeed happens.
The long external lateral boundary wall is designed to neutralize the possible interference from adjacent buildings. The blue 20 ft high wall acts as a background, thus providing a primary continuity, unifying the environments under its visual omnipresence with bluish sunlight reflections filtering through the void space between house and wall (a building code stipulation).(...) The essential points of the program are satisfied by the linear block where private living spaces are superimposed on dining, kitchen and domestic maintenance areas. Unfolding alongside gardened areas, the main façade also adjusts to the blue wall’s deflection by a continuous and very subtle curving and proceeds to the plot’s other end, defining the building’s main space: an ample, two storeyed, living room.
