The first move to restore the Polytheama dates from 1986 and was coordinated by Lina Bo Bardi, with a team formed by architects André Vainer and Marcelo Ferraz.

(…)

The project was only resumed in the mid 1990s by the Brasil Arquitetura Studio, without Lina’s involvement but following the same guiding principle—to rescue the popular and multifunctional character of the building. The architects, however, had to restructure the project, because the adjoining plot was no longer available. The administration of the flow of visitors and artists, would have to be dealt with inside the building. In the end, the annex, which was to be located at a lower level at the back of the plot and was planned to provide support to the artistic and administrative activities, was not built either. The alternative was to build a concrete gallery and stairwell on a side of the building, between the boundary wall and the lateral façade with its brick buttresses. The new circulation scheme, now internal, also features elevated concrete walkways in the double height foyer and along the sides of the building, which lead to the seating areas.
